Other voices: Congress should do right thing on Afghan refugees America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan is one of many blights on the Biden administration’s spotty record. The fact that this nation since then has turned its back on Afghans who helped U.S. troops only makes the matter worse.But there is a remedy for this injustice.Since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan more than two years ago, the United States has welcomed more than 80,000 refugees from the country. Some have relocated to Southern Nevada.But the humanitarian program that allowed them to come here provides only temporary protection and no road to permanent residency. In addition, thousands of Afghans who aided the American war effort remain at risk in their home country, unable to cut through the red tape and flee to the United States. Albany duo charged in string of car thefts ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Two Albany men were arrested following car theft investigations at the Hertz Rental Car Company at the Albany International Airport. According to the Albany County Sheriff's Office, Austin and Phelps showed up at the airport in a stolen car for the purpose of stealing another car that belonged to Hertz Rental Car. On Tuesday, while sheriff's investigators were processing Austin, deputies said Phelps showed up at the police station to check on Austin. (NEWS10) -- A Saratoga Springs man was arrested Thursday following an investigation regarding home renovations. Dakota Smith, 28, is charged with third-degree grand larceny. According to the Albany County Sheriff's Office, investigators say Smith took over $39,000 from an older couple, promising to renovate their home in the town of Rensselaerville in December 2022. Deputies say during the investigation, it was learned Smith did not start any of the work that he promised, stopped communicating with the couple, and never returned the money.Deputies say Smith has a history of embezzlement around the Capital Region and faces charges in multiple jurisdictions. VSP investigating suspicious death in Rutland County Smith was arraigned at the Rensselaerville Town Court. He was released under the supervision of Albany County Probation.

Fatality shuts down SB 101 Freeway through Hollywood area A fatality involving a pedestrian on the 101 Freeway prompted officials to close the southbound lanes through the Hollywood area Friday morning.The incident was reported by Los Angeles police as a vehicle versus pedestrian around 4:45 a.m. on the 101 Freeway at Vermont, according to the California Highway Patrol.
